What is a breath-holding spell?

A breath-holding spell is when a child suddenly holds her breath at the end of a crying episode. After a few seconds, the child turns blue, then relaxes, and recovers. If a child prolongs the breath-holding period, they may turn blue, and then lose consciousness and go limp. As soon as the child loses consciousness however, the body's reflexes that control breathing take over, and the child resumes normal breathing.
On rare occasions, a breath-holding spell may result in a seizure. However, if a seizure is not preceded by crying or turning blue, most definitely it is not caused by a breath-holding episode. In febrile seizures and epilepsy, turning blue will follow the seizure, not precede it.
What is the best approach for breath-holding spells?
Although breath-holding episodes are very frightening for parents, damage of any kind to your child is quite rare. If your child has a breath-holding episode, respond to it like you would with a temper tantrum.
